Mike Assad is a New Jersey and Pennsylvania bankruptcy attorney who represents individuals and small business owners in financial distress. He has represented individual and corporate debtors in reorganizations and liquidations in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey and the Eastern, Middle, and Western Districts of Pennsylvania.

His practice covers consumer Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 cases as well as small business reorganizations under Subchapter V of Chapter 11. He also litigates student loan discharge actions.

Professional Leadership in the Bankruptcy Bar

Mike has helped shape how bankruptcy law works in the region:

  • Steering Committee Member and Consumer Education Chair, Eastern District of Pennsylvania Bankruptcy Conference (2026-present)
  • Member, Local Bankruptcy Rules Committee, Eastern District of Pennsylvania (2024-2025)
  • Third Circuit Leader, National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys (2024-2026)
  • Lecturer, Pennsylvania Bar Institute

This work keeps him current on how the local bankruptcy courts apply their rules, which affects everything from filing logistics to how judges handle plan confirmation.

A Background in Public Service

Mike came to law from public affairs. In 2006, Absecon voters elected him to the local Board of Education, making him one of the youngest elected officials in New Jersey history. He served seven years in public office. He also worked for the president of the New Jersey Senate and advocated on legislation at every level of government. Atlantic City Weekly named him one of its Top 40 Under 40 in 2009.

That background shows up in his law practice. Explaining a complicated system to people who do not work inside it is the core skill of both jobs.

Education

Mike earned his B.A. from Thomas Edison State University in 2017 and his J.D. from Widener University Delaware Law School in 2019. During law school, he worked as a research assistant on Smolla and Nimmer on Freedom of Speech, one of the most influential treatises on the First Amendment.

He also served as treasurer of the law school’s Youth Court Society, where he volunteered to teach students in Chester public schools about restorative justice. He continues to judge the school’s biannual alternative dispute resolution competition, which he won as a student.

Outside the Office

Mike lives in South Jersey with his wife, Gianna, and their daughter, Cecilia. Their pug, Nala, keeps the home office running on schedule.
