Galloway is the largest municipality in New Jersey by total area, but its money stress tends to cluster around two campuses: Stockton University and the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center Mainland Campus in Pomona. Students carrying credit cards on top of loans, university staff stretched between semesters, nurses and techs keeping a 323-bed hospital running while the interest compounds at home. Debt here rarely comes from recklessness. It comes from tuition, medical bills, and life stacking up faster than a paycheck, and bankruptcy law exists for exactly that.

Median household income in Galloway runs around $90,000, and plenty of people assume that number puts Chapter 7 out of reach. It often doesn’t. The means test compares your income to the New Jersey median for your household size and then subtracts real expenses, so a two-income family with a mortgage, childcare, and commuting costs can still qualify. When Chapter 7 genuinely isn’t available, Chapter 13 caps payments at what your budget actually supports and discharges the remaining unsecured balance at the end. Earning a professional salary and drowning anyway is common. It’s also fixable.
The student loan question, answered honestly
Student loans are hard to discharge. There’s a hardship standard, it’s a separate fight inside the case, and most filers don’t clear it, so we won’t pretend otherwise. What bankruptcy does reliably is clear the debt around the loans: the credit cards, the medical bills, the personal loans. Once those disappear, the student loan payment usually stops being the thing that breaks the month.
What changes the day you file
Collections freeze under the automatic stay: garnishments, lawsuits, repossessions, and calls all have to stop. Creditors who ignore that learn it the hard way; in one client’s case we won Rule 9011 sanctions against a creditor that crossed the line. Filers generally keep their homes, vehicles, and retirement accounts while the discharge clears the unsecured debt underneath.
Where the case actually happens
On paper, in Camden: Galloway filings go to the District of New Jersey’s Camden vicinage at 401 Market Street. In real life, at your kitchen table. The 341 meeting of creditors runs on Zoom as standard practice, the paperwork moves by phone and email, and hardly anyone who files ever makes the drive to Camden. If you’d like to meet in person, the Egg Harbor Township office is roughly 20 to 25 minutes from most of Galloway.
The price, up front
Consultations are free. Fees are flat, quoted before you sign anything, and payable over time. Qualifying Chapter 7 filers may be eligible for the $999 flat fee. One call to (609) 808-3300 gets you a real number, not a range.
If the degree or the hospital badge came with debt that won’t move, call (609) 808-3300 and talk it through with a bankruptcy lawyer, free. You’ll get straight answers and a plan, whichever chapter fits.

Chapter 7
Chapter 7 bankruptcy in Galloway
Wipe out debt and start fresh
Chapter 7 is the fastest path to a fresh start. For most people in Galloway who qualify, it clears credit cards, medical bills, personal loans, and most other unsecured debt in about three to four months, and it stops collection calls, lawsuits, repossessions, and wage garnishment the day we file.
Whether you qualify depends on the New Jersey means test, which compares your household income to the state median. Most of our Galloway clients keep everything they own. New Jersey lets you choose the set of exemptions that protects the most, so your home, your car, and your retirement are usually safe.
Chapter 13 is for people in Galloway who are behind on a house or a car, owe back taxes, or earn too much to qualify for Chapter 7. Instead of liquidating, you keep your property and repay what you can over a three- to five-year plan, often for a fraction of what you owe.
It is the strongest tool we have to stop a foreclosure or a repossession and make a lender accept your missed payments over time. When you finish the plan, the remaining qualifying balances are discharged.
Subchapter V is a streamlined Chapter 11 built for small business owners. If you run a business in or near Galloway that is buried in lease payments, equipment loans, or merchant cash advances, it lets you reorganize that debt and keep operating, without the cost and delay of a traditional Chapter 11.
You stay in control of the business, propose a plan to repay creditors from future earnings, and in most cases keep your ownership. Mike has represented business debtors in reorganizations across New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Common questions
I'm a Stockton student with maxed-out credit cards. Is bankruptcy overkill at my age?
Not automatically. If the card debt is large relative to what you earn and there's no realistic payoff path, a Chapter 7 discharge in your twenties can be a reset rather than a scar, and credit tends to rebuild faster than people expect. We'll also tell you plainly if your situation doesn't justify filing, because sometimes it doesn't.
I work at the hospital and just got a garnishment notice. How fast can this stop?
Quickly. Once your case is filed the automatic stay requires the garnishment to stop, and payroll departments at large employers process those notices routinely. If a paycheck or a deadline is imminent, say so on the first call and we prioritize accordingly.
We're a two-income household near that $90,000 median. Chapter 7 or Chapter 13?
It depends on the math, not the headline number. Household size, mortgage, taxes, childcare, and vehicle costs all feed the means test, and families above the median pass it more often than you'd guess. If Chapter 13 turns out to be the fit, it's a structured plan with an end date, not a punishment.
Galloway covers a lot of ground. Do I need to come to an office at all?
No. The whole case, from consultation through discharge, can run by phone and Zoom. The Egg Harbor Township office is there if you prefer sitting across a table, about 20 to 25 minutes away, but nothing about your case requires the trip.
